A Case Study : the self-management skills training for enhancing academic achievement of an adolescent with ADHD diagnosis

Abstract
The case study described about the process of self-management skills training which was conducted for the client, named as A, who was 15-year-olds student with ADHD diagnosis. The purpose of this case study was to show the effectiveness of a newly developed self-management skills training which was designed for enhancing academic achievement of adolescents with ADHD. The manualized self-management skills training which was mediated by parents¡¯ home-based contingency management consisted of time-management, planning and organizational skills. A client has been diagnosed at 4th grade and under medication treatment until 6th grade. However he was not taking medication when he was recruited for the program. A client completed 8 sessions training for 4 weeks and his mother for 6 sessions training during in a same period. Treatment effectiveness was assessed with self-reported measures, direct academic performance indices and treatment acceptability measures. Pre-post gap analysis indicated that ADHD symptoms and depressive feelings decreased about 1 standard deviation(SD) at the follow-up assesment, self-regulated strategies improved about 1 SD, and independent learning time increased about 80% compared to the time of pre-treatment assessment. GPA improved to the level at which the participant targeted at the beginning of training. The participant and his mother showed satisfaction with training up to the desirable level.
